Limiting the Fort Lewis College Skyhawks to six points in each quarter was good enough for the WNMU Mustangs to get their second and final win of the season, 48-24. Quarterback Chris Voller (Albuquerque, NM/Valley High School) (Albuquerque, NM) had a sensational day, throwing for 433 yards and five touchdowns; while the Mustang defense put constant pressure on the Skyhawk quarterback to limit them to only 208 yards in the air.
The Skyhawks got on the board on their opening drive with Joel Johnson's rush for an 11- yard touchdown in just three and half minutes. A blocked point after held the score to 6-0. It only took a little over one minute for the Mustangs to tie the game, however. Voller found Scotty Crespin (Socorro, NM/Socorro High School) (Socorro, NM) on a 37-yard pass for Crespin's fourth touchdown of the season. A botched snap on the point after kept the game tied at six.
On the next WNMU drive, the Mustangs marched the length of the field in five quick plays. The first was an incomplete pass to John Means (Glendale, AZ/St. Mary's High School) (Glendale, AZ), but Voller recovered for a four-yard pass to Crespin. Then Voller connected with Jake Morales (Silver City, NM/Silver High School) (Silver City, NM) for seven more. A seven-yard rush by the quarterback and then a huge 62-yard pass to Means put the Mustangs up by seven, 13-6.
Things remained quiet for much of the second quarter as both teams traded possessions. Finally with 2:51 remaining in the half, Voller tacked on his third touchdown of the day with a complete pass to Carlos Miranda (Peoria, AZ/Peoria High School) (Peoria, AZ). Steve Flores (Peoria, AZ/Peoria High School)' (Peoria, AZ) extra point was good.
Fort Lewis found themselves in great field position in the third quarter after a Voller pass was picked off by Mark Meng at the WNMU 48 yard line. Meng then returned it for 35 yards to the WNMU 13. Facing fourth and six, quarterback Justin Peters hit Brian Englehard for a nine-yard touchdown. Fort Lewis' two-point conversion attempt was unsuccessful. Fort Lewis was still down 27-12, but they weren't out yet. The Skyhawks were able to post six more points with 7:00 on the clock in the third quarter to come within nine.
On the Skyhawks next drive, the WNMU defense was solid and forced the Skyhawks to punt from their own end zone, not giving them much room. Wyatt Mette (Peoria, AZ/Centennial High School) (Peoria, AZ) took advantage and blocked the Mark Meng punt to allow Willie Duran (Sunland Park, TX/Coronado High School) (El Paso, TX) to recover the ball for the touchdown. The Mustangs were up 34-18.
Three drives later, WNMU posted seven more after Voller located Tramell McGill (Phoenix, AZ/Hamilton High School) (Phoenix, AZ) for a 63-yard touchdown, Voller's longest pass of the day. WNMU now had the 23-point advantage.
Each team was able to post another touchdown in the fourth quarter to finish the game.
Means finished with 113 yards and two touchdowns on six catches. Crespin also had a solid day as a receiver with 108 yards and one touchdown on nine catches.
Defensively, Darryl Horne (Mesa, AZ/Dobson High School) (Mesa, AZ) posted 12 tackle to lead the game. One half tackle was for a loss of five yards. Anthony Kahill (Cincinnati, OH/Jacobs High School) (Cincinnati, OH) recorded ten tackles. Eight of those were solo and two were for a loss of 12 yards.
The Mustangs finish the 2008 season with a 2-8 regular season record.
